epic poetry
   In ancient Mesopotamia, epic poetry consisted of literary works that were generally long, explored major myths or heroic legends, and dealt thematically with weighty issues such as the origins of the world and humanity, the relationship of humans with the gods, and the meaning of life. Modern scholars believe that such works were at first passed along orally, gaining length and detail until someone finally wrote them down. After that, they became part of the collective literature of the region and were copied and recopied over the centuries.
